LANDMARK restaurant which has lain empty for nearly five years could soon reopen.

The lease on Teignmouth’s landmark Beachcomber Restaurant has been put out for tender.

Rental bids are to be submitted by 2pm on Wednesday, March 16.

Cllr Richard Keeling, Teignbridge Executive member for Corporate Resources, said: ‘Our aim is to let the building as quickly as possible and we are excited about the opportunities it can offer. Its reopening will benefit residents from the town and surrounding areas as well as boosting the tourist economy.’

Agents Bettesworths say: ‘The former Beachcomber Restaurant enjoys one of the most prominent commercial Seafront pitches in Teignmouth.’

The property has been extensively repaired following a devastating fre in July 2017.

It is described as a spacious two storey detached building, with prominent trading space on the first floor and the potential to add ancillary/commercial kitchen space below, on the lower ground floor.

The restaurant is likely to be of interest to operators wishing to re-establish the unit as a first class hospitality/catering business, benefitting from its wonderful seafront location. It could potentially seat up to 70 covers on the first floor level.

The lower ground floor area would ideally house a commercial kitchen and ancillaries, thus ‘freeing up’ the upper floors for trading space and making the most of the stunning views. Further outside covers could be accommodated, subject to separate negotiation.

Matt Bettesworth, who is dealing with the marketing of the property on behalf of Teignbridge Council said: ‘We are delighted to be appointed on behalf of the Local Authority to assist in finding a tenant for this unique seafront unit.

‘The former Beachcomber Restaurant provides an exciting opportunity for any budding operator to secure one of the best waterfront pitches in the South Devon area.

‘It is enhanced by the decision to increase further space on the ground floor level, allowing anyone trading the upper floors to maximise covers and take full advantage of the wonderful panoramic sea views.’

Cllr Keeling added he too was delighted that this prime seafront site was now on the market. ‘By relocating the toilets and making the whole building available for let, we believe we have created the flexibility which will appeal to prospective parties.’
