PLANS for a new ‘street hub’ in the centre of Newton Abbot have been withdrawn following concerns being raised about the proposed location.
Submitted by BT Group PLC, the application - reference 26/00894/FUL - had sought permission for a BT Street Hub outside Superdrug on Courtenay Street.
But following conversations with Newton Abbot Town Council, the company has decided to withdraw the application.
The town council supported the proposal in principle, but raised concerns about the location, namely that the area of Courtney Street in question is often used for events.
BT said it intends to continue discussions with the town council to find a suitable alternative location, with a revised planning application expected to be submitted in the future.
The hubs, which measure three metres tall and come with two screens each, provide free public Wi-Fi, emergency calling facilities and device charging.
