STEAM trains are continuing to operate at the South Devon Railway despite recent reports of restrictions on steam locomotives because of hot weather.

The railway has clarified that the restrictions apply to steam trains running on the Network Rail mainline and do not affect heritage railways such as the South Devon Railway.

With weather warnings and fire-risk advice being closely monitored, additional safety measures are in place, including a dedicated ‘fire train’ fitted with high-pressure fire pumps.

And there’s more to look forward to, with the railway’s Heritage Weekend returning on September 12 and 13.

The behind-the-scenes event will offer tours of the engineering workshops, a visit to Buckfastleigh’s old Signal Box, heritage skills demonstrations and a display of classic cars.
