MORE than 400 people were added to the Sex Offenders Register last year, a Freedom of Information (FOI) request has revealed.

A total of 443 new individuals were added, the FOI request submitted to Devon and Cornwall Police shows.

The figure includes both Registered Sex Offenders and those on a Sexual Risk Order

As of March 31, 2025, Devon & Cornwall Police managed 2,927 Registered Sex Offenders, another FOI request shows.

The Sex Offenders Register records the details of people convicted, cautioned or in prison for a sexual offence since 1997.

The definition of a sexual offence covers a wide range of offences from voyeurism to rape.

Every adult convicted, cautioned or in prison for a sexual offence against a child goes on the register.

Otherwise, whether someone goes on the register depends on the type of offence and the sentence.

Registered Sex Offenders are managed in the community by specialist police and probation officers.

Sex offenders are often released from prison 'on licence', meaning that they have specific rules they must follow and failing to do so may mean having to go back to prison.

If a person is sentenced to 30 months or more in prison they stay on the register indefinitely.

However, people cautioned, but not convicted, for a sexual offence stay on the register for two years.
