ONE MILLION train tickets went on sale across the UK on Tuesday, with their prices slashed by up to 50 per cent.

MP Mel Stride said: ‘Through the Great British Rail sale, the Government is offering passengers significant savings on journeys between April 25 and May 27. The first nationwide rail sale in history, the discount will be available on selected Advance tickets from participating train companies, or Off-Peak tickets as an alternative on some routes. Customers can find out more by visiting greatbritishrailsale.nationalrail.co.uk.

Railcard customers will also be able to save an extra third off a Great British Rail Sale ticket. This means that under 30-year-olds, over 60s and disabled passengers will travel for less.

The Central Devon, who backed the successful campaign for an Okehampton to Exeter rail service, giving more than 10,000 of his constituents access to a regular passenger service for the first time in decades, said: ‘This is a great initiative that will help save families money and encourage more people to ditch their cars and use the train. It should also be a boost for the many businesses in Central Devon that are reliant on tourism as I have no doubt there will be many who take advantage of the Great British Rail sale to have a break here in Devon.”

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps added: ‘For the first time ever, operators across the rail industry are coming together to help passengers facing rising costs of living by offering up to 50 per cent off more than a million tickets on journeys across Britain. There’s no better time to visit friends, family or just explore our great country, so book your tickets today.’
