PEOPLE are having their say on the controversial plans for Newton Abbot’s Queen Street proposals.

Devon County Council has launched a 21-day public consultation on the plans.

Details are emerging of how Newton Abbot town centre will appear once the proposed new traffic restrictions are in place.

Following July’s consultation to measure the support for a pedestrian enhancement scheme in Queen Street, the results of this consultation were presented to the Teignbridge Highways and Traffic Orders Committee it was resolved that detailed proposals would be consulted upon during 2022.

Devon County Council is now running the formal Traffic Regulation Order consultation into the detailed until November 17 and inviting comments.

l The Authority’s Highways department has issued the proposed traffic order which plans to introduce no waiting and no loading at any time along some sections of Courtenay Street, King Street, King Street, St Pauls Road and Victoria Place, with restricted times along other sections between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Saturday.

l The order will also see no waiting, Monday to Saturday, on lengths of Albany Street and King Street 8am-6pm.

l Allocated pay and display parking places will be along parts of Queen Street, St Pauls Road and Victoria Place.

l Queen Street and Albany Street will also see the introduction of 20mph speed limit on Queen Street between the War Memorial and Courtenay Street.

l One-way traffic on Hopkins Lane and length restrictions on specified stretches of Devon Square, Lking Street, Oak Place and Queen Street.

The county stated: ‘Specifically, the restrictions proposed are for avoiding danger to persons or other traffic using the road or any other road or for preventing the likelihood of any such danger arising, for facilitating the passage on the road or any other road of any class of traffic (including pedestrians) and for preserving or improving the amenities of the area through which the road runs.’

Anyone wanting to object to the proposals can do so before November 17.
