PEOPLE living with Parkinson’s in Devon are being invited to take part in a new Pickleball event aimed at helping local people living with the condition to stay active.
The session will take place at Torquay Tennis Club on Belgrave Road from 10am on Monday, August 31.
It is being delivered by the club’s team and is open to people of all ages and abilities.
Experienced instructors will introduce participants to the basics of Pickleball, with all equipment provided.
The sport, which combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis, can offer a range of potential benefits for people with Parkinson’s, including improved balance, coordination, strength, flexibility and mobility.
Organisers say taking part can also support wellbeing, mindfulness, memory and cognitive skills, while providing opportunities for social interaction and communication.
Participants will also have the chance to try Petanque, a popular French game involving players throwing hollow steel balls, known as boules, towards a small wooden target ball called a cochonnet or jack.
Carers and relatives are welcome to take part or watch the activities, with tea and coffee also available.
Following the sporting sessions, there will be a Parkinson’s quiz and fundraising raffle in aid of Parkinson’s UK.
Those attending are advised to wear comfortable active clothing and suitable footwear, and to bring water, snacks and any medication they may need during the day.
