MORE than 1,000 tonnes worth of fridges and freezers were processed at Devon County Council (DCC) recycling centres last year, a Freedom of Information (FOI) request has shown.

The total tonnage of the food preserving units processed by DCC’s waste and recycling services in 2023/24 was 1319.701, the FOI shows.

Last year’s figure was slightly down on 2022/23 where the total tonnage was 1386.528.

For large household appliances generally, excluding fridges and freezers, the total tonnage processed in 2023/24 was 1340.03.

Local authorities provide a chargeable bulky waste collection service for items that are too large to be disposed of at home, such as fridges and freezers.

Alternatively, bulky household items can be taken to your nearest recycling centre, including Brunel Road Recycling Centre.
