FURTHER details of the proposed new health and wellbeing centre in Teignmouth have been released.

Teignbridge planners have received application 22/01853/MAJ  from developers on behalf of Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust and the Devon Health and Care Community.

The centre is mooted for a town centre site, bounded by Brunswick Street and Northumberland Place, which is currently taken up by a car park and a vacant building and site. The application calls for the demolition of the vacant building, a former garage.

Crossing the site is Osmond’s Lane, a pedestrian right of way that connects Brunswick Street and Northumberland Place, as well as forming part of a route connecting the river Teign to the west to The Den and Teignmouth beach to the east.

The site, identified in the Teignbridge Local Plan as an area suitable for regeneration, sits within Teignmouth Town Centre Conservation Area.

The application states the development ‘provides an opportunity to integrate GP services with NHS Trust services on a central site in Teignmouth, bringing together a wide range of support covering physical and mental health, as well as social care and wellbeing.

Bringing all of these services together within one building will allow greater integration and coordination of care for the local community.’

A similar scheme was originally developed for a neighbouring site on Brunswick Street. However, the site for this scheme was smaller than the current site, and there were concerns about the size of the building and its impact on the surroundings.

Around the same time, planning approval was gained on the site between Brunswick Street and Northumberland Place for a hotel. That scheme never went beyond the planning stage and the site became available for the health and wellbeing centre.

A car park has been provided on the site for staff, and visitors who require accessible spaces. This is accessed from Brunswick Street, via a new vehicle entrance.

Patient cycle parking is provided at both public entrances, while staff parking is provided within the secure area to the north of the site.

The application continues: ‘The new health and wellbeing centre will create an opportunity to integrate GP and specialist NHS Trust services within one building, and improve the healthcare provided to the community of Teignmouth.

The site’s location in the town centre places the building at the heart of the town, and makes the new centre accessible with a wide range of modes of transport.’
