A PUB in Widecombe-in-the-Moor is among ten Devon venues to have earned a place in The Telegraph's newly launched guide to the 650 best pubs in the UK.

The Rugglestone Inn joins nine other Devon pubs featured in the national guide, which has been expanded this year to include pubs from across Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland after the success of the national newspaper’s ‘500 Best Pubs in England’ guide in 2025.

A historic, Grade II listed building, the Rugglestone was originally an 1800s granite cottage; it features a cozy interior with log fires, a large sheltered garden with a stream, and traditional, locally sourced food.

Also making the list are The Bridge Inn in Topsham, The Globe Inn in Beaford, The Clovelly Inn in Bratton Clovelly, The Dolphin in Plymouth, The Devonshire in Sticklepath, The Champ in Appledore, The Albert Inn in Totnes, The Durant Arms in Ashprington and The Volunteer Inn in Ottery St Mary.

The guide highlights pubs that offer what its panel of experts believes are the defining qualities of a great British local: a welcoming and lively atmosphere, high-quality drinks and a strong sense of community.

The 2026 edition marks the first time the guide has covered the whole of the UK, adding 150 pubs from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to last year's England-only selection.

The expanded guide comes as The Telegraph continues its campaign to support Britain's pubs, highlighting the economic pressures facing the hospitality industry.

The newspaper says an average of four pubs a day are closing in 2026 and hopes the guide will encourage readers to visit and support some of the country's best venues.

The English selections were chosen by beer, food and travel journalist Will Hawkes, who returns as the guide's pub expert.

He is joined by Robin McKelvie and Mike MacEacheran for Scotland, David Atkinson and Kerry Walker for Wales, and Nicola Brady for Northern Ireland.

Will Hawkes said: ‘Despite desperate operating conditions, Britain still has hundreds of magnificent pubs, offering warmth, atmosphere, character and fantastic drinks.

‘You'll find the best of the best in our guide.

‘This year, we have expanded the guide to cover all of the UK, meaning there are now great pubs to discover from Shetland all the way down to Land's End.

‘My colleagues and I have spent the first part of the year scouring the nation to find these magnificent pubs – a truly joyous experience.

‘We are sure that readers will enjoy discovering these amazing pubs as much as we did’.
