AN ASHBURTON man is drumming up support for a new community youth band for the Ashburton and Buckfastleigh area.
John Fisher and two of his friends are looking to create a band similar to a marching band, initially starting with drums and the fife; a short military marching flute.
John began his journey into music when he learned to play the bugle with the Boys’ Brigade at the age of 12, and has barely stopped playing since.
After a hiatus from running the Boys’ Bridge band due to work commitments, John is keen to start something once again.
‘This is essentially to give young people a chance to learn to play an instrument,’ said John. Secondly, it’s a chance to learn to read music - if they want to, there’s no direct requirement to do so, but if you do it’s a boon all through your life.
‘Also, it brings young people together as a team, where they learn to work together, bounce off one another and develop a sense of self-worth and discipline.
‘It’s going to be young people-centred. I want the young people to take ownership of it. We will guide them, but I want youth leaders to come forward to get the whole thing rolling.’
There will also be opportunities to perform and take part in local events.
John has already spoken to Ashburton and Buckfastleigh Town Councils, who are on board with the plan. All he needs now is some instruments and a few helping hands from adults in the community. The group will be in need of an independent treasurer, a safeguarding officer and anyone else who’s willing to come forward and give their time and expertise.
John hopes that if he can give even a small part of the enjoyment he’s found in music to the next generation, that will be a success in itself.
John added: ‘I thought of doing this when I was bored laying on a sun lounger on holiday, thinking to myself that I should be putting something into the community similar to what I got out of it myself. At 74 years of age, I’m still getting enjoyment out of music. Perhaps with this band, I can get some others to find enjoyment with it too. We’ve got to leave a legacy.’
