FIREFIGHTERS from Newton Abbot were among the crews called to tackle a major blaze at a holiday camp at Collaton St. Mary on Sunday afternoon, as emergency services battled a fire that engulfed part of a reception building.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received multiple calls reporting the incident shortly before 2pm on Sunday, June 14.
Initial resources included fire engines from Paignton and Torquay, along with an aerial ladder platform from Exeter.
As crews made their way to the scene, firefighters requested additional support, prompting the mobilisation of a water carrier from Torquay.
Upon arrival, crews confirmed that the building was ‘well alight’ and called for further assistance.
A fourth fire engine from Brixham was dispatched to provide additional personnel, before the scale of the incident led to two more appliances being requested from Newton Abbot and Buckfastleigh.
Specialist support units, including an Environmental Protection Unit and a Welfare Unit, were also sent to the scene.
During firefighting operations, asbestos was discovered within the roof structure of the building.
Local residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed to prevent smoke and any airborne particles from entering nearby properties.
Firefighters divided the site into sectors and worked to bring the blaze under control using main water jets, breathing apparatus teams and a range of specialist equipment.
The fire was successfully extinguished, with crews remaining on site to ensure the area was safe.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
The incident was then handed over to police, who will assist with further enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the blaze.
No injuries have been reported.
