Antisocial behaviour by some jet-skiers is causing problems for swimmers and other leisure sports such as paddle boarders and kayakers off Teignbridge’s resort beaches.

Yellow marker buoys, which mark the safety exclusion zone for boats and jet skis, are being ignored with too many people not using the designated boat lanes to get to shore and breaking the 6knt speed limit within the harbour.

By ignoring the marker buoys and coming too close to the beach children and families who are swimming, playing and enjoying other non-motor sports are being put at risk and this has led to safety discussions involving the harbourmaster, the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) and the Council’s resorts team.

Teignbridge Executive Member for Leisure, Cllr John Nutley appealed to people using jet-skis and motorboats to observe the markers, reduce their speed and not to come too close to the beach. “We want all water users to be able to enjoy the wonderful coastline Teignbridge has to offer, but this can only happen if people respect each other and the safety rules put in place to protect everyone.

“There is plenty of room for everyone to enjoy the sea, but a minority of jet ski and motorboat users are spoiling it for everyone and unless they stay outside the designated safety zones which are in place to protect swimmers and beach users, they are putting lives at risk.”
