THE END could be in sight for the infamous traffic lights in Shaldon.
‘Temporary’ two way lights have been in operation since February 2024 following a landslip on an embankment between Ringmore Road and the A379.
Now, Shaldon Parish Council has announced works are expected to being in September.
The ongoing saga was criticised by councillors and residents, angry over the length of time the lights were in place.
Fed up parish councillors even staged a tongue-in-cheek ‘birthday’ party to mark two years since the lights were put in place.
However, mystery still remains over how much the repairs will cost and who will foot the bill.
Devon County Council said ‘discussions remain ongoing’.
A spokesman for the parish council said: ‘Shaldon Parish Council is pleased a confirmed timetable is now in place for repairs to be carried out to the wall and the temporary traffic lights removed.
‘Although the Devon County Council officers we invited to our second birthday “celebration” for the temporary traffic lights did not attend, there has since been communication with them and county councillor Heather Horner which has resulted in a commitment to get the repairs started in September, as soon as the busy school holiday period is over.
'This is clearly a major step forward and the parish council would like to thank Cllr Horner for her help.
‘The parish council continues to seek clarification of the expected duration of the work and of the traffic management which will be required during these repairs, mindful that minimising any impact on village businesses, residents and visitors should be a priority.’
A Devon County Council spokesperson said: ‘A start date is yet to be confirmed for repairs to the wall at Ringmore Road in Shaldon, but the parish council has requested that we consider not starting before September.’
A Freedom of Information request in November 2025 year revealed the highways authority had already spent more than £43,000 on the set of lights to manage the wall collapse.
