EGGCITEMENT is building in Dawlish awaiting the arrival of two new Black Swans.
Despite the precarious site of the nest in the middle of the Brook at Tuck’s Plot, two eggs remain safe on the nest and are expected to hatch soon.
Efforts have been made by the waterfowl wardens and WADE volunteers to help control the water levels by managing the sluice gates and turning off the fountain temporarily.
A spokesman for the waterfowl wardens said: ‘There is excitement building by the day on the Brook.
‘Kimba is still faithfully keeping the eggs warm while Bert stands guard, ever watchful and protective.
‘It won’t be long now until the new cygnets make their appearance.
‘These two have been a devoted pair, working together to care for the nest and prepare for their little ones.’
The owners of holiday accommodation Pilchard Cottage are keen swan watchers.
They said: ‘It’s like Dawlish Daddy Daycare, just after the changing of the guard, daddy swan Bert reprised his fierce caregiver role as he valiantly scared off all ducks, pigeons and seagulls who dared to waddle too closely to his precious nest.
'The nest containing two eggs has managed to survive against all odds.
‘Any day now we hope there may be two gorgeous fluffy little babies.’
