Six pupils from St Michaels Primary school in Kingsteignton have raised a fantastic £60.50 for Teignmouth RNLI.
In their last term of Year 6 at St Michael’s, they were asked by their teachers during their PSHE time ( Personal, Social, Health and Economic Wellbeing education) to work in small ‘Enterprise’ groups to raise much needed funds for a local charity by designing and making a product that people would buy.
The six girls got their heads together to discuss the many charities that needed assistance, especially after Covid hit many of them with reduced donations. The girls, Kendra, Georgia, Izzy, Lily, Rebecca and Freya quickly decided that the Teignmouth RNLI Station would be their charity of choice.
The next question was what could they design and make that would benefit the Charity’s funds, be fun to make and provide customers with a quality product whilst they themselves learnt how to work as an enterprise group. It’s one thing having some best pals but working with them with the many different tasks is another angle completely, but one in which they were able to recognise each other’s strengths and skills.
However, the industrious pupils could see a market for trendy bracelets and a need for lovely stationery so after a few trials in making and sharing the finished products, they set to and organised themselves into a small production line, having problem solved their initial ideas, found solutions after trial and error and recognised and appreciated each of their own individual talents, interests and tenacity in making their project work through ‘teamwork’ and a tightly controlled budget!
The girls, represented here in the photo by Izzie and Georgia, were invited to the Station to have a look round and see how the crew worked as a team.
Here the crew are ready to go out on a training exercise - once again, working together, to make a difference to saving lives at sea - that’s what the RNLI does - making sure that everyone in their crew knows exactly what to do and trusting in the knowledge, skills and experience that each of them have built up as a team.
