THERE is still time to see artist SarahB’s exhibition, Textile Stories, at the HeARTs Gallery at Torbay Hospital before it ends this weekend.
SarahB is a member of MAKE Southwest and Green Maker Initiative.
She sews her art on a vintage Jones treadle machine; her work is in the permanent collection at The Museum of Design in Plastics (MoDiP) in Poole, Dorset.
SarahB recently won the prestigious best newcomer prize at the inaugural Contemporary Craft Festival in Bovey Tracey, Devon.
Her latest exhibition, Textile Stories, focuses on environmentally sympathetic practices, and she says she ‘jumped at the chance’ to get involved creatively with Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.
She said: ‘I have had the chance to work with their artist in residence Helen Snell plus had some wonderful support of hospital staff who have embraced using visuals of my embroideries in such an exciting way.
Sarah also produced a permanent wrap-around wall art at our eye clinic reception, bringing calm and a sense of warmth to everyone who uses the waiting area.
Sarah added: ‘It is a real honour to be able to help enliven a space devoted to health and healing, particularly as Torquay is where my mother lived as a child and where she made the decision to become a nurse.
‘My mum’s grandfather was also a doctor in Torquay, so while my life’s journey is through the creative arts, having my first key public art show in the HeArTs Gallery based within Torbay Hospital, as well as the eye clinic, is significant to me.
‘It has been wonderful to know people have embraced the visuals of my embroideries in such an exciting way.
‘It is a real honour to be help enliven a space devoted to health and healing and having my first key public art show in the HeArTs Gallery is really significant’.
You can see SarahB’s work on display at the HeArts Gallery on level 4 at Torbay Hospital until Sunday, January 18.
