In the Second World War, everyone was encouraged to make a space in their garden and dig for victory.

It was all about planting potatoes and vegetables, so we didn’t starve. It might not be such a bad idea to do now.

Ukraine is the fifth largest bread-basket in the world, and Russia is about the top one. This will mean that food and specially cereals are likely to more than double in price over the next year, due to stored grain being lost, and little replanting in Ukraine.

That’s bread, cakes and pasta. And some cooking oils. It seems that yet again we had the wrong strategy. Instead of growing more food in the UK, we have chosen to get rid of agricultural land and build houses instead. Ever tried eating bricks? And with the lack of any dentists, not good!

The UK, like many western countries, have gone for globalism, which means if the world is stable, we just trade with each other for what we need. The trouble is, it never was stable, this was and is a disastrous policy as we are now finding out. The UK needs to import about half of its food to feed the growing population. That’s on top of having to import most of its oil and a lot of gas.

I have been writing to the Government for years telling them to stop building on farmland, but it fell on very big floppy deaf ears, and I don’t mean rabbits, they are more intelligent than that.

Instead, they changed the planning laws making it near imposible to stop any new areas going under the bulldozer – as we all know. We need a complete freeze on building on farmland and green open spaces. Rethink our strategy on food, housing and our energy, and pronto!

Just for the sake of climate change we need to stop shipping food all around the world and grow as much as we can locally. We may not be able to grow all our food in the UK, but we could do a lot better than we are.

Then there is the other area I keep writing about, changing the building regulations for all new homes, and only build highly insulated and heat pump-ready Eco homes.

But once again, it seems that the government would rather pander to the construction industry instead of home-owners energy bills.

I won’t even mention our defence strategise which seem as bad as the rest.

We can’t find much oil or much more gas around our lands, but we could have a new energy saving plan, grow a lot more food, which would also help our balance of payments with other countries.

My hope is this dangerous three fold reliance on other countries for so much of our essential’s, may at last make us plan to be more self-reliant. I know some will say, we must build more homes, but there are other way of housing people than just using our precious agricultural land.

This must stop right now, or we could all find ourselves going hungry in the near future. The world is about to change, and we cannot continue as we were. Wake up government and listen to the people, not vested interest groups, let’s think how we can solve all these problems and save the planet at the same time. There are scientists and others who know how to do this, even if ministers don’t!

A late bit on news: Michael Gove said at the weekend, ‘we should not think of Putin as mad, it’s not helpful, but see him as ruthless, just on a different moral sphere.’ I don’t see much difference.
