A CONSULTATION has been launched ahead of a £5million upgrade to Dawlish Leisure Centre.

Teignbridge Council is now asking residents for views on plans to refurbished the popular facility.

The aim is to turn it into a modern leisure centre and help people of all ages stay active and healthy.

Existing facilities will be improved and new spaces for exercise classes and wellbeing will be created.

The upgrades will also make the building more energy efficient and ensure it meets the needs of a growing community.

The consultation shows the proposed floor plans. People taking part can share feedback on the design ideas.

The proposed improvements at Dawlish include: a larger gym with more equipment and exercise space; two new activity studios for exercise classes, indoor cycling, yoga and dance and modernised changing facilities, including male, female and inclusive village-style areas.

Improved ventilation and air quality through the building, upgrades to the centre’s solar energy systems and additional parking are also planned.

The swimming pool and all-weather pitch are expected to remain open throughout the refurbishment.

Councillor John Nutley, Executive Member for Leisure, Recreation, Resorts and Tourism, said: ‘Dawlish is a growing community and it is important local leisure facilities continue to meet the needs of residents.

‘These proposals represent a significant investment in health, wellbeing and active lifestyles.

‘We know leisure centres are important in supporting physical and mental wellbeing.

‘They also bring communities together and help prevent ill health. That is why it is so important local people help shape the final designs and tell us what matters most to them.’

The council is also hosting an event where people can ask questions and talk about the proposals.

Cllr Nutley and Head of Leisure, James Teed, will be at Dawlish Leisure Centre on September 23 from 9.30am to 11am.

Residents have until 25 October to complete the survey which can be access at: https://teignbridgetalks.teignbridge.gov.uk/dawlish-leisure-centre-refurbishment
