A 62-year-old Devon man has appeared in court today (Monday) charged with treating controlled waste in a manner likely to cause pollution or harm to human health.

Christopher Garrett, of Lindridge Hill, Kingsteignton, has been accused of treating asbestos in a manner likely to cause pollution of the environment or harm to human health between July 2018 and May 2022.

He is also charged with knowingly permitting activity in contravention of an environmental permit by operating a waste operation including the deposit and storage of controlled waste other than authorised by the environmental permit.

Garrett did not enter a plea to either of the charges.

Newton Abbot magistrates court declined jurisdiction and the case was sent to Exeter Crown Court for a hearing next month.
