THE work of an eighteenth-century composer and teacher of music from Combeinteignhead was celebrated at an event in the village.

The Devon West Gallery Quire, a costumed quire, recently performed the works of William Bennett at All Saints Church, where Bennett was buried in 1802.

Musicians and choir singers rehearsed his works and those of two other eighteenth-century composers from Devon, Stephen Jarvis of Dartmouth and Samuel Chapple of Ashburton.

The musicians comprised violinists, a cellist, a bassoonist and flute players.

William Bennett wrote anthems, metrical psalm tunes and other church music, which were highlighted at the end of the concert.

The Quire Crediton made a £120 donation, Chris and Angela Bennet also made a donation bringing the total to £150.
