SHALDON’S much-loved ‘Open Gardens’ weekend in aid of Cancer Research UK has raised more than £4,000, organisers have confirmed.
The annual fundraising event saw 14 private gardens open to the public, alongside five pop-up cafés and a range of stalls throughout the village.
Organisers said the weekend was extremely well attended, with visitors praising the variety of gardens and the welcoming community atmosphere.
They added that the event once again helped bring the village together, while showcasing what Shaldon has to offer.
Organisers described the weekend as a ‘real community effort’, thanking everyone who contributed to the £4,397 total, which is a new record.
This included residents who opened their gardens, volunteers who ran cafés and stalls, and bakers who provided homemade cakes.
Local businesses were also thanked for supporting ticket sales.
Special recognition was given to Bradleys estate agents in Shaldon and Teignmouth, who organisers said played a key role in the event’s success.
The business helped sell tickets, collected tombola prizes, donated advertising banners, assisted with planning and garden coordination, produced programmes and posters, and installed directional signage around the village.
The organising committee also thanked the wider team of Cancer Research UK volunteers who gave their time and energy to support the weekend.
Organisers said donations have continued to come in since the event ended, reflecting strong ongoing support for the fundraising effort.
Anyone who was unable to attend, but wishes to contribute is encouraged to leave donations, at Bradleys in Shaldon or Teignmouth.
The Open Gardens Weekend remains one of the village’s key fundraising events of the year, and organisers say its success would not be possible without the commitment of volunteers and residents.
