A YOUNGSTER from Starcross has won a top prize for her computing skills.

Amelie South, 11, a pupil at Starcross Primary School scooped the top spot for coding in what was described as an ‘amazing achievement’.

She came first in the Discovery Education’s Top Coder Challenge 2023, a popular computer programming competition for schools across the country.

The challenge invited children to unleash their creativity by designing animations, apps and games.

Amelie took first prize in the KS2 category of the challenge, after designing an exciting underwater fishing game.

The judges were impressed by her entry, which showed ‘great imagination and coding skills’.

Amelie’s prize is a Botley Coding Robot , plus a year’s free subscription to Discovery Education Coding for her school.

Amelie said: ‘I was very excited when I heard I had won the competition! It was a lot of fun coding my game in school.’

A spokesman for the school said: ‘We are so proud of Amelie as she worked very hard on her game and really followed the brief she was given.

‘The whole school will benefit from using the Discovery coding software for the next year.’
