DARTMOOR National Park Authority has issued a warning to visitors following recent warm weather, which has brought more adders out into the sunshine across Dartmoor.
Adders, Britain’s only venomous snake, are native to moorland, heathland and coastal areas.
Their camouflaged markings and secretive nature mean they are often difficult to spot.
The authority said adders emerge from hibernation around March for the spring mating season, with males sometimes performing a ‘dance’ to attract mates and deter rivals.
Dog owners are being urged to take extra care, particularly in areas of undergrowth where dogs may disturb snakes.
While adders usually avoid humans, they may bite in self-defence if startled.
Although bites are rare, they can be serious for both people and pets.
