POLICE are investigating reports of youths on e-bikes attempting to steal a phone in Dawlish.
The incident is said to have involved two young people who have been seen riding around the town.
The victim described how the pair tried to steal a phone while they were out walking.
They said: ‘Thankfully, I reacted quickly and managed to avoid being mugged before he sped off.
‘They have been reported to the police again, who are already aware of their behaviour.
‘If you see them around, please report their location and a description to the police right away.
‘Stay vigilant out there, everyone. It’s such a shame — when we moved to Dawlish 15 years ago, it was a beautiful, welcoming town.
‘Now, sadly, it feels like things have really gone downhill.’
The incident happened on Thursday October 30.
Police in Dawlish have promised to crack down on e-bikes following complaints of intimidation and anti-social behaviour.
And they have promised to seize any bikes involved in such behaviour.
Electric bikes can be ridden without a licence or insurance by anyone aged 14 or over.
It must have pedals used to propel it; have an electric motor that can run at a maximum power of 250 watts and have no electrical assistance once it reaches 15.5 miles per hour.
If an e-bike fails to meet the regulations, it will be treated by police as a motor vehicle which means riders must wear a helmet and have a valid driving licence, insurance and registration.
