NEW VICAR

There was a crowded congregation at St James’ Church last Saturday for the induction and institution of Rev Alan F Forder as vicar. The ceremony was conducted by the Bishop of Crediton, the Rt Rev W A E Westall, and Mr Forder was presented by the Rev Alan J N. Cook, rector of St Peter’s, Cornhill, City of London, on behalf of the patrons of the Living, the Hyndman Trustees.

The vicar’s warden, Mr F G Clark, also welcomed the new vicar and his family, on behalf of the parishioners of St James’: ‘It is now seven months since the Rev Kenneth Rick was compelled to resign this benefice. While that happening brought considerable sadness to our people, today it is an occasion for much rejoicing,’ said Mr Clark.

BLOWN OUT TO SEA

When a commercial was being filmed for Westward Television off Teignmouth on Monday afternoon, three actors in a small sailing boat of ‘pirates’ looking for treasure, being used on the film, were swept out to sea when an oar snapped.

They were carried half a mile in almost gale force winds, and landed on the only spit of sand between rocks at Spray Point. The three recovered from their ordeal with hot drinks at the Royal Hotel, and carried on filming at Newton Abbot.

BOXING CHAMPION

Congratulations to Steve Willis, who last Saturday brought honour to himself and to the town by winning a national schoolboys’ boxing championship at Ponting’s Camp, Blackpool.

He was one of six Devon and Cornwall boys who won their finals. The crowd were really thrilled, and at the end, Willis and his opponent Mike Connolly of Oldham, received a standing ovation. It came as no surprise when he was awarded the trophy for being the outstanding Junior B Class boxer in the Championship.

IN DAYS OF YORE

50 years ago: Six chestnut trees planted round The Den were broken down by ‘some evil-disposed miscreants’.

ASTRONOMY COURSE

Completion of a three-year course on astronomy, conducted by the Teignmouth branch of the Workers Educational Association, was marked by a presentation of a book to the course tutor, Mr Hedley Robinson FRAS, with thanks for the success of this venture.

Excellent publicity for this course was provided when the first man landing on the moon was made on July 21, 1969. Satellite photography, plus an occasional visit to Mr Robinson’s observatory, were useful practical supplements. A selection of remarkable pictures were sent to them by American, Japanese and Russian astronomers.

PAPER BOYS WANT MORE PAY

In the current issue of THIS, the Teignmouth Secondary Modern School magazine, they are urged: ‘Why don’t you join the newspaper boys’ and girls’ revolt? We will make a strike so prominent that no one will get any papers.

‘They are bound to give us more money. Are you fed up with getting up so early in the morning, walking all the way up that hill, through that garden? Sometimes it is wet, sometimes you are tired. Maybe one morning the bag is so heavy. Why do it? Just think – you could get another 25p.’

WISE WORDS
